Best headphone under 250?

The best bang for money in this price limit is ATH-A900X. It is in a different league from the headphones that you mentioned. Do not get any of those.

I would agree that the A900X are excellent headphones for the current price. But sounderhd is looking for portable headphones. The large bulky size of the A900X would make them a poor choice for portability, and I would worry about the wing system being damaged unless one has a very good case for them.

Hi Zorin,

Your choice seems interesting and ideal. However, I am a bit worried about the portability issue, Ad900x is no where near a portable headphone whereas the shure 840 are collaspable even though they are home/studio use. However, your choice would be the best in terms of sound I suppose and I think I would have gone for that if it weren't for the portability issue. Thanks for sharing though.

i am willing to compromise sound quality for portability and comfort. if it is heavy and bulky,i wont be able to carry and hence wont be able to use. so yeah i am looking for something with:
1. cable less than 6ft or = 6ft
2. NOT BULKY
3. COMFORTABLE for long use
4. CLEAR sound

Hi there again Sounderhd,

Would you by any chance be able to audition them first. Here is the shure folded:

Also check the review out in headfonia:
http://www.headfonia.com/shure-srh-840-out-of-the-box/
There are a couple of links after that that talks about 50 hours burning in and so on (scroll down)

Here's a review by him comparing it to Hd25 and esw9 a wood portable from Audio Technica
http://www.headfonia.com/srh-840-hd25-1-and-esw-9/

Anyway, it would be great if you could audition them as you will be able to make sure that an i pod could drive it ok (headfonia says it can drive it to loud volumes so I think it should be fine, although if you had an amp you could take out more of its potential). Also you could try out the comfort, I would go for an around ear rather than on on ear as my cd900st did feel uncomfortable (the shure should be around ear). You could also check out cd900st at headfonia http://www.headfonia.com/sony-mdr-cd900st/. In fact check out all the related headphones in headfonia, I find them very useful. I believe the shure would provide very clear sound as they are monitor headphones. Though the problem is the straight wire is around 8ft, perhaps the coiled wire would be shorter.

As for portable, I think folding it and putting it in the bag provided should be fine. Although at the end of the day, it is a fullsize so it could affect your looks when you walk.
Sorry if I couldn't be much of a help

Im telling you, just get the Sony mdr 1r, or the ath ws99 if you want a darker and bassier sound. People are gonna give you tons of recommendations like the ue6000, m50, m80, amperior, etc., but it's impossible to know for certain which you will like best. Just buy from Amazon so you can easily return.

I second the MDR-1R, and go test it out in a Sony Store if you don't believe me.  It will be hard press if you can find another headphones as comfortable as the MDR-1R for $200.
