Open is generally better. I think I would consider the hd555.

Avril's songs are considered pop/rock, so i'd recommend some grado's or alessandro's. These are great open cans but if you need some closed cans i'd recommend a pair of ultrasones as their sound isnt too far off from the grado's and these will sound amazing for bass heavy music especially for music by Rihanna.

I don't listen to much pop, but I would check out the Ultrasone HFI-780, ATH-M50, or Shure SRH-840.  I like how grados sound, but if you want any privacy they are not for you.

I wouldn't recommend Grados for Avril Lavigne. I was thinking Ultrasones as well, but aren't they a little V-shaped? I don't know if they would do wonders for the Vocals and guitar? Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I've never heard these.

I have a pair of HFI 780s, and yes, they are somewhat v-shaped. I like them with most music, but again, I don't listen to pop...sooo I can't really comment much there.....

Panasonic RP-HTF600-S, semi-open headphones.
Add Beyerdynamic EDT 200 Velour ear pads.
Well under your budget.

What are you going to be plugging the headphones into?
