I'm looking for a replacement for my soundmax onboard optical sound card. while it's ok on sound, i want better. I was looking at the chaintech, but have read it doesn't hold a candle to the e-mu 0404, which sucks for gaming. what would be the best choice for gaming and music listening, as my computer is my main means for both? budget is $150 but anything less worth looking at is welcome.

emu0404 is a steal at $100.

For gaming and music the audigy 2 zs or terratec dmx 6fire would probably fit your needs.

You can get an E-Mu 0404 AND an Audigy 2 Value for under $150, which is really the only way to get the best framerates for games + the highest audio quality for music.

i was happy with my audigy 2 zs

I am happier with the emu 0404

the e-mu does sound slightly better to my ears then the audigy 2 zs for music.

if you do play quiete a bit get the audigy 2 zs.. of if u need suround and stuff..

Anyone know how the usual Envy24HT suspects fare in gaming, particularly, say, the Revolution 5.1 or Juli@? (I never play any games here, so I'm running my Aureon without Sensaura enabled.) I would have suggested the Revo 5.1 if multichannel operation is a priority. It'll certainly be miles ahead of cheapo onboard sound when it comes to sound quality.
