I previously made this thread:
http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=164934
My budget was $180 there and everybody recommended the Audio-Technica ATH-A900 to me. Well, lets say that I can now spend $250. Is there anything that would be vastly better than the A900 for that price? Remember, I will not be using or buying an amp, and the headphones will be powered by my X-fi sound card. I don't want to spend all that money if I don't have to. All I'm saying is that I now CAN if need be. Everything holds true from the previous thread, the only factor to consider for these headphones is games. If it does something else well, great, it will be icing on the cake. If not, thats just fine. So is there anything vastly better than the A900 for $250 that will be great without an amp?

What about the ATH-AD900? How are those? Are open cans good for games?

i myself use the Sennheiser HD 595's for games, and found them excellent. Open vs closed doesn't matter much if you're in a relatively quiet enviroment, but if you need to hear that enemy shuffle his feet at 20 yards, closed 'phones will help you if your enviroment isn't very quiet.

you could get the 595's and an amp for $250

The cheapest I can find the HD595's is $190, so that means an amp would be $60. Most amps I have seen are very expensive and cost $200+, would I be able to get a DECENT amp and stay in my budget? Are amped HD595's better for gaming than an ATH-A900?

I'd say DT770/80 ($160 from GC is pretty easy to swing) and a Go-Vibe or something else at around $100...

i can't comment on the a900, as i've had zero experience with them.

all i can say is that i'm a gamer, and i love my HD 595's, even without an amp, straight out of my Audigy2 ZS. that anwsers the original question in your first post: "Are open cans good for games?"

Ok, as you can probably tell, I'm pretty new to this. Can you tell me who makes those and the specific model number? Thank you. Any more input on this? I don't want to get something and then find out I could have gotten something better. Oh and I have decided I would like closed cans.

Beyer Dynamic DT770-80. They 80 refers to 80 ohms. There are more than one type of the DT770 and the 80 ohm version is the one you're going to want for gaming. They're carried by Guitar Center in-store and you can probably find them in the For Sale forum here as well. Either those or the a900's and you won't be dissapointed. They are THE two cans recommended most for gaming and for good reason.

So the a900's are still better than the dt770 even if I can afford the dt770? Whats the difference between the A900 and the A900LTD? BTW, I just found $20 laying on the floor at the office today, and I am thinking of selling my sony MDR-XD400 for $45 or so, so assuming that goes well, I would have $315, is there any combination of headphones and an amp for that price that would be better for gaming than the a900?

Go with the A900s and save the rest of the money for W5000s which can be used for critical listening chores.

For gaming go A900s. I own the 595s as well and they are good too. Tough choice. I am not really the person to ask. My can list grows from day to day.

are you a gamer? if so, can you give an idea on how well you can position in-game sounds with the a900 and the hd 595?

i find that i can tell very well where the sound is coming from with my hd 595, but there still some .. fuzz factor in there

Ahhh this is really killing me. The HD595's and the A900's are literally exactly the same price, but I would need an amp for the HD595 as well, right? Are there any good amps for the HD595 $90 or under? I'm leaning toward the A900s, but can anybody confirm which is better? I DON'T want to spend more money if I don't have to.
