I've been looking at a few like the
-micro dac
-constantine
-Spitfire dac

what other good DAC's are there out there in that price range and what would be the best for a k701. oh, and i'm using a laptop as a source so probably usb out and maybe optical if i get a TBAAM.

If you're going to use a TBAAM with your K701s I don't think there's any point in fussing over the DAC. You should consider a better source like maybe the M-Audio Transit. A good USB DAC is hard to find for $300.

I think the EMU 0404 USB might be a good choice but the internal amp may not be strong enough for the K701s. Anyone have experience with this combination?

I was also looking at the emu0404 but I don't need the internal amp because I have a heed canamp. i'm really leaning towards the spitfire Dac or the micro dac. or should i go with the fubarII because there isn't a big difference....or what. and why did I put this in the amp section ><

Take a serious look at the Musiland MD10 here if you haven't already.

I could comment on it, but there is already a ton of info about this great dac in that thread.

I have a zhaolu (with CS4398) paired with AKG701's and it feels a bit lifeless. 701's are so hard to please!

I like my MicroDAC. It's as close to a neutral source that I've heard in anything in that price range.
