HI!

Im fairly (not really) new to audio gear and have gathered some over the years. Recently I decided to purchase a used AURALiC VEGA for cheap (kind of) and hooked it up to my CD-player through the Schiit IEMagni. Problem with the VEGA is the lack of a headphone output.

Now my question is, how would you guys connect it? A great amp? Via USB to the computer? Doesn't an amp degrade or change the sound somewhat? Any help would be great =)

And yes, feel free to roast me about my lack of knowledge in audio gear. Im here to learn! And get ridiculed...

Not here to ridicule. Well since this is a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) you are going to need a amp to use with speakers and or headphone’s. Not sure what you mean by a amp degrading the sound as if you don’t have a amp there will be no sound while this is not totally true it is more sane. Most Dac’s output 2 volts Single ended and 4 or so balanced so you could run headphone’s out of them but have to watch the impedance of the output and also the volume as most Dacs don’t have variable output so this would be adjusted at the source if possible but just kind of crazy .

On top of @buke9's helpful suggestions it would be cool to know a bit more about your setup and how would you like to use it. Are you into speakers or headphones more? From your post I gather that you're into headphones more, but would you like to use any specific model? Would you like to use your DAC with a PC or streamer alongside your CD player? Thanks!

Ah! Im a headphones guy at the moment but planning on buying speakers down the road. I own a bunch of IEMs from cheap to pricey aswell as a pair of Focal Clear and HD-650.

Im mainly listening to CD at the moment but I have a turntable aswell. Im thinking streaming sometimes but mainly CDs or on the rare occasion, vinyl.

Ive looked into a Topping A90 but some people find that to boring?

Those Focals and Senns are great cans that deserve a solid headphone amp. Your Vega's output stage is balanced, so ideally you'd want to look into headphone amps that are also balanced. Is there any price range you wouldn't like to surpass?

If you're happy with CD playback, now I'd probably focus on a headphone amp to complement your headphones and then I'd look into streaming.

What to some listeners is boring to others is very attractive  That Topping is balanced and that's a plus knowing that you have Auralic Vega, but there are many balanced amps out there that would go well with your headphones. Are there any particular qualities (sound characteristic? utilities?) you look for in a headphone amp?
