For a variety of reasons closed headphones are becoming more useful for me. I like the Ultrasone HFI 650s I have but they demonstrate various performance deficiencies. Given the price point one would expect this, great for the money but there must clearly be better.

That said what are the best performing all around CLOSED headphones under 1k?

HFI 650's are nowhere near the best closed for under $1K heres a few that come to mind:

Audio Technica ATH-W1000
Audio Techinca ATH-A1000x
Ultrasone Proline 750(assuming you like the ultrasone sound)

and maybe

Audio-Technica ATH-A2000x if thats under $1000 too. I think audiocubes has them for $600

EDIT:- just checked audiocubes, and the rest are as follows

Denon D5000 - $649.99
Kenwood KH-K1000 - $449.99
JVC HP-DX1000P - $1049.99

I have read some people compare and say the JVC are almost on part with the sony MDR-R10, though im an AT fan

For what it is worth, my favorite closed headphones right at 1K are the Denon AHD-7000s. Unfortunately I do not own them, too expensive at the moment, but I have listened to them for several extended periods of time. The system was a Naim CD5x, Naim Headline amp and NAPSC power supply, which is not too shabby, but certainly not the best available. I also listened in this system with Sennheisers and AKGs. The sound was balanced, extended, rhythmic and dynamic with everything I listened to. I do not see how anyone could go wrong with these headphones.

I'd have to nominate the W5000s (never knew anyone to pay over 1K for them) with the strong caveats of a matching system and head shape.
