best CLOSED cans

The K271S completely surround my ears, not supra-aural at all... my ears are relatively small though. So I guess if you have small ears and a big head you are set with them.

I have big ears and feel that the K271S are circumaural, but they could be more "spacious." Also, I agree that they definitely transfer weight to the ears.

I hope you like them, and if you don't I doubt you will have much problem selling them.

Reviving this old thread.

I'm currently using A900 (having sold my AKG k271s for the aforementioned features and discomforts of sweating and not being completely circumaural on my head).

However, A900 have the classic AT sound: very reverbant, a tad bright and with an upper bass emphasis. They are not completely neutral in the mids either, but it's not that bad.

What's the next CLOSED FULLY CIRCUMAURAL headphones step up from AKG K271S, A900, HFI650 Trackmaster and DT770/80?

I'm contemplating:

- Ultrasone Proline 750 (worried about brightness, cans not being fully circumaural, cord being microphonic and cans having too much clamp. These were some of the problems with old Trackmaster 650)

- Anything else?

HD280 are a 'no' as are Sony models (tried them). 250-80, not circumaural for me.

Since we ARE talking about the best CLOSED headphones UPTO $200 which so many fail to remember, that would be the Audio Technica ATH-A900.

I'm looking for something better (than A900, K271s, HFI650, HD280, DT770/80).

Please let us know if you find anything better.

What about the more expensive AT's?

The Beyerdynamic DT 660 albeit very bright might be worth a try although they might not meet your circumaural criteria. The DT 250-250 is also very nice but you said the 250-80 (same design) is not circumaural enough. Other than these, you'll probably have to spend more than $200 for the higher end Audio Technicas or Sony CD 3000. Not much help, sorry.

halcyon - You've already tried the best and got rid of them.

You could always go with one of the high end custom IEM's, but you would be waving goodbye to soundstage from what I've read.

I can go higher than $200USD. I don't want to buy Sony R10 though, nor L3000. Those prices are too much for me. Something like $500USD tops, if it's significantly better than the aforementioned cans.

I guess I'll just have to test HFI750 and mod my A900 while I wait for the manufacturers to release a truly good pair of truly closed circumaural headphones.

Maybe AT will release another limited edition headphone soon, carved out of astral wood that is 30 000 years old

PS CD3000 isn't my cup of tea either.

For what it is worth so late in the thread - The hd280s are good, the A900s better (modded to reduce bass). I understand your point, though, wanting something better than the a900s.

The AKG271s sound interesting. I might get some one day.
