Best classical recordings...ever!

Speaking of the Czech Philharmonic, I had the Kletzki/CPO - Beethoven set on my wishlist for the longest time. I remember bigshot extolling its virtues.
A few weeks ago, the price dropped (supraphon why you so pricey) and I finally got my paws on it.

Wow...

Probably the most unique sounding (in the best possible sense) orchestra I've heard for Beethoven. That pastoral symphony ... <3

Hence looking for this orchestra for Mahler...

Serkin's Beethoven Cto #5 with Bernstein/NY Phil is my one of my favs for that piece.
His ctos on Telarc with Ozawa are so-so, I have his 5th, and the soundstage is a bit squished, imo. Weird.

Is it just me, or am I just lookin' for trouble? Recordings that get mixed press reviews tend to entice me, more than those that get raves all 'round. An example: Abbado's mahler 3 with the VPO. I already liked his 3 with the BPO. His VPO account got flaked a few times. With Jessye Norman doing the vocals, I figured, why not?....and it isn't that bad at all. Very listenable, heck with the VPO's strings,...

fwiw there is a separate Mahler thread here :

In general I'd say music is a very personal affair. Some overall well regarded recordings don't do anything for me (e.g. HvK ...) and some recordings that don't appeal to some critics are my favorites. What ever rocks your boat, or is it floats your boat?

I like Chailly's Mahler..(and RCO) his 3rd and 8th are brilliant

I was leaning that way. The Concertgebouw have a distinguished Mahlerian track record.

The last orchestral tutti in the 6th clips, so I just couldn't take it ^_^ If you want my set, I'd sell it off cheapz.

Petra Lang does a stunning performance of 'O Mensch, gib acht' in the 3rd, the soloist and chorus' of the 8th are very good (which is often only so so)..also the 1st, 4th and 9th are very good IMO.. All the criticisms on Chailly's Mahler are just white noise to me

Maybe because most orchestras just wait for that bloody storm to arrive

Yes perhaps because its a calmed symphony :D compared to the 9th, 5th, or mozart's 40, , 35, 39, 41.. I do even have the beethoven symphonies transcribed for the pianoforte by franz liszt interpreted by Leslie Howard great pieces.. but the 6th is equally boring :D

Yes. (I hate the 6th). PM'ed, need price. Thanks.

Well now I'm not sure you deserve it, Mr. Hates Hammers.

LvB 6th is probably the one closest to my heart, but if done wrong it's just a horrible mess (esp. the 2nd mvt and the finale).
