Etymotic er-6i with the foam tips has the best isolation I have heard yet.

THe EX51 IMO is not adequate for isolation purposes.
Better stick to IEMs.

Other than ER6/i if you're planning to buy new, you can look into the Altec Lansing Im616 ($95 amazon). I have yet to hear this one but I used to own the Im716 which IMO has superb SQ and isolation.

I also remember seeing an article from pcmag saying that the reviewer prefer the im616's sound over the ER6i.

Sennheiser CX300 or Creative EP-630, worn under regular hearing protection (headband and cups) ?

[edit] Or, if regular hearing protection looks too dorky, these same phones with homemade foam tips.

People have been having some trouble getting the EP-630 recently, but I understand it's a good choice. Mine (G*d willing) will be in my PO box tomorrow when I check it, and I can post impressions then. From what I understand, it's about even with the more expensive CX300, so it's not an Etymotic but it's a fraction of the price.

I have heard the Altec Im716 or Im616 are a good choice although a little hard to drive if I do recall reading that. They are based on the ER4P/S. And are actually designed by Etymotics Research.
