First, let me preface this by saying that I am a newbie to the headphone world. However, my wife and I have very different schedules causing her to go to bed about 2 hours before me. She is a light sleeper, so we have a constant battle about how loud my home theater system should be. I figure a good solution would be to use headphones after she goes to bed.

As these headphones will be primarily for TV/Movie viewing, I imagine having a good soundstage to "articulate" the surround sound formats is important. I will be using them plugged into a Denon receiver.

My budget is $100 to $150 or so.

Any ideas?

Thanks

i hear lots of recommendations for the HD555 for home theater purposes... but i for one think they lack a bit of bass for explosive action movies

On my system, I prefer the Edition 9 over the HD-600. It depends on your budget... Might have to add a zero.

Sony MDR-F1. But it's open and sound will leak out, but not so much that it will bother someone in an adjacent room. Great soundstaging, and you'll think you have the speakers still on.

DT770. Great isolation, too, for both you and for those around you who don't want to hear your movie.

I think we need to focus more on the performance of surround sound, but not just the sound quality as listening music. I believe this is why this thread was create because there is few information regarding a good headphone in both sound quality and surround performance.

Where do you find these for $140? Looking for some good cans for home theater use at night (condo) and don't want to spend more than $150. So far I've seen these for $200. I've been looking at the Sennheiser HD555s.

Edit: Ok, I did find a few pairs on Ebay, but they're 250 ohm... what's the difference between those and these (other than 170 ohms)?

i own a HD555, and i think it sound's quite good for watching movies, especially if you use Dolby Headphone/Dolby Prologic. Soundstage is quite awesome, sometimes feel quite realistic. About the low end freq, i just boost up the low EQ and it sounds ok. Watching DVD is.. great

You might also give some consideration to the ATH-A700s or a used pair of ATH-A900s, both of which I have found very good for your application and should fit nicely in your stated price range. I have a similar situation with my wife and my late night movie watching habits and have run both the a700 and the a900 through my Onkyo for the purpose of keeping peace in the house with great success.
