My 6 year old Logitech system got hit my lightning yesterday and I am now looking for another. I only want a 2.1 right now as I don't have the space nor the room setup for anything better. I did some googling over the past two days and I found posts from last year but I was wanting something more up to date.

I found that this setup is mentioned a lot:

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sub-1000-10-100-watt-powered-subwoofer--300-628
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-b652-6-1-2-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-pair--300-652
http://www.amazon.com/LP-2020A-Lepai-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI

Would this setup be something still recommendable?

If it still holds true, any suggestions on a cheap DAC that I could use to help to improve the sound a bit? I don't want to spend anymore than 300 bucks. I only use this system for movies and shows for my projector.

Thanks for any help!

Hifimediy makes low costing USB DACs ($57+shipping) with the Sabre chip.

I bought that lepai amp twice and they both gave up within months. I have got another similar sort of budget amp that has lasted me over a year though.

I use this amplifier only for my sub-woofer. This amplifier does have a noticeable hiss on the speaker outputs but not as bad as the other ones that gave up.

Definitely, for $300, you can build a nice sounding setup.

There are better grade t-amps. Topping makes the TP20. I have the Indeed TA2021 (actually, I have two of them). Bit better SQ, better build quality, and a bit more volume than the Lepai amps. But you know for their price, you could watch your local Craigslist for a couple of weeks and snag a used Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, or Yamaha stereo or audio/video receiver (assuming you have the room for it). The audio/video versions will also have a built in DAC. You should be able to find one with both optical and HDMI inputs, whichever would best suit your setup.

The Micca MB42X are considered an upgrade over the current generation of those Dayton speakers (the 1st generation of the Daytons were the best).

The Dayton SUB 1000 is definitely a very good sub for the money. Even the Dayton SUB 800 would be very good for a computer desktop setup if you want to save a little money there and would like a smaller sub (since you said you don't have much room).

And I agree. The Hifimediy would be an excellent DAC to work into your budget.

I ended up getting JBL 305 + lexicon alpha based on what people over at AVS suggested. The total price was 304 so I went a little out of budget. I am liking it a lot thus far and I'll get a subby sometime next year.
