Yes, picture editing. High resolution and deep dark blacks are necessary. Fast gaming response not as critical.

In that case, you definitely do not want a TN panel.

Again, I'd look into deciding between the 2408WFP and LP2475W. They're the two big dogs when it comes to 24" IPS.

LP2475w + a colorimeter both for calibration and for toning down the color saturation. I have a Spyder II and it works very well.

The 2408 is a VA panel.

The Philips Brilliance 240PW9EB 24" can be had for a pretty good price and uses the same H-IPS panel as the HP LP2475W. I got one for $419 CAD last week; you will not beat that price for a H-IPS panel.

If you can stretch your budget just a little, you might also want to take a look at the new Dell U2410. It retails for $599, but with coupons, you should be able to get it for about $480 or so (plus tax, but they usually have free shipping).

jenneth,
Thanks for the tip on the new Dell. I was very close to buying the older Dell model mentioned here after seeing one in the flesh (very impressive picture quality indeed, great recommendation guys). But something came up and I had to wait a bit. I will save my sheckels for the new unit. Cheers.

Try this model:

LG Electronics W2486L 24" LCD panel with LED backlighting

I just saw this at Fry's Electronics today and WOW, it's probably the most beautiful LCD computer monitor I've seen in a long, long time. Playing back a Blu-ray movie shows the amazing sharpness, superb contrast, and excellent colors of the W2486L. And it's available for around US$400, too.
