I'm just curious here but why is it that portable amps don't have a battery level indicator? Just a simple row of LED lights to show how much power is left on the thing. Can't imagine it taking up a lot of space or consuming much power.

Those indicators display the remaining voltage left.
Works if there is only one type of battery, but doesn't if one can put
in alkalines, NiMHs, or lithiums. They all have different voltage vs.
remaining charge characteristics.

And personally, I'd rather not pay for such a thing.

The space used by the simple row of LEDs is better off be used to make the amp sounds better imo

Well, if you learn the battery characteristics, it's no big deal. I got my XM-5 with the rechargeable battery option, and the blinking voltmeter on power up works well.
