Not sure if these count as "concept albums" or what...

I really like Coheed and Cambria. The musicality has been wonderful sicne day one. However, I just spent a few hours reading the whole story that the albums are based around, and it's some awesome stuff! I was just wondering if there are any other bands that have albums that tie together and tell one big story. The only one I can think of off of the top of my head is "The Dear Hunter". Of course, the music is what really matters, but having something to really intrigue me like the plot line of Coheed and Cambria would be great, too.

The story for "Frances the Mute" is one of the most effed up things ever. Abandoned babies and murdering pediophilic priests, for example. The story for "deloused in the comatorium" is pretty sad. Both are by the mars volta, in case you didn't know.

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

from wiki:
The Crane Wife is an old Japanese tale. While there are many variations of the tale, a common version is that a poor man finds an injured crane on his doorstep (or outside with an arrow in it), takes it in and nurses it back to health. After he releases the crane, a woman appears at his doorstep with whom he falls in love and marries. Because they need money, his wife offers to weave wondrous clothes out of silk that they can sell at the market, but only if he agrees never to watch her making them. They begin to sell them and live a comfortable life, but he soon makes her weave them more and more. Oblivious to his wife's diminishing health, his greed increases. He eventually peeks in to see what she is doing to make the silk she weaves so desirable. He is shocked to discover that at the loom is a crane plucking feathers from her own body and weaving them into the loom. The crane, seeing him, flies away and never returns.

Hah, my favorite concept album is definitely angra's Temple of Shadows. An 11th century crusader knight, becoming disillusioned with the catholic church's expansionist ideals, goes on an epic journey, then starts his own religion. Now render that in latin-tinged power-bordering-on-prog metal, and you have an idea.
Actually, I just came across it uploaded elsewhere, so if you're interested:

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

The album presents the story of "Ziggy Stardust", a Martian who comes to earth to liberate humanity from banality. Ziggy Stardust is the definitive rock star, sexually promiscuous, wild in drug intake and with a message, ultimately, of peace and love; but he is destroyed by his own excesses of drugs and sex, and torn apart by the fans he inspired. The mythological story cycle of the doomed Messiah endeared itself to fans then and now.

Edge of Sanity - Crimson ("The album tells the story of a world where humans can no longer beget children. Into this atmosphere of despair a child is born to the King and Queen of the barren Earth." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson..._Sanity_album))

Almost any from King Diamond (witches, ghost, etc.)

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient ("The story begins with Ziltoid arriving at Planet Earth and demanding their ultimate cup of coffee (ZTO). When he is disappointed by the cup they give him, he attacks Earth with his army and his secret weapon - his guitar playing." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziltoid_the_Omniscient)

OK, all of these sound great. However, I think I misworded my original question. I think I was looking more for Concept Bands.

See, all 3 of Coheed's CDs, and their next one, are part of a large story. Both of The Dear Hunter's CDs are acts in the same story. Are there more bands whose entire collection of work kind of contributes to one great work of storyline? Even revisiting melodies from album to album and such?

GWAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't even know the full story about it. Just some crazy **** my friends told me at sotu. They started as a marketing project. They we're frozen in ice for many years, and after they we defrosted they yelled GWAR!!!! and then started killing dinosaurs??? They are crazy especially live. This isn't coherent. Gwar gets me rambling about things I don't fully understand. END
