Balanced armatures are some of the oldest sound transducers. They were used in early sound powered crystal radio sets.

gives some clear info on the old technology. They have been updated and miniaturized for today's applications. The old sound powered sets are easy to understand because the parts are so large. An internet search for "balanced armature speaker" will give more results as well.
