Many artists can do it once, but very few do it consecutively! Name 3 artists, and their back-to-back albums that you feel symbolize the very definition of perfection.

Tool – Aenmia, Lateralus
Pearl Jam – Ten, Vs.
Metallica – Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets

Here's my favorite -- these two gems are always mentioned together:

Grateful Dead: Workingman's Dead & American Beauty

Plus two more:

Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers & Exile on Main Street
John Coltrane: Giant Steps & My Favorite Things

How about asking for trilogies????

I'll second that emotion on the Grateful Dead and the Rolling Stones

How about:

Husker Du -- Zen Arcade, New Day Rising & Flip Your Wig (which I believe are consecutive)

Steely Dan - (Decadence Trilogy) The Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho

David Bowie -- Low, Heroes & Lodger (the third's a bit iffy)

The Jesus Lizard - GOAT/LIAR

Slayer - REIGN IN BLOOD/SOUTH OF HEAVEN

Sonic Youth - EVOL/SISTER

Just 3?

one more..

Husker Du - ZEN ARCADE/NEW DAY RISING

Probably one of the best trilogies is:

The Cure - SEVENTEEN SECONDS/FAITH/PORNOGRAPHY.

And another one:

The Replacements - LET IT BE/TIM/PLEASED TO MEET ME

And one more:

Iron Maiden - NUMBER OF THE BEAST/PIECE OF MIND/POWERSLAVE

That's funny, 'cause I would have listed it as:

Cure: Boy's Don't Cry/SEVENTEEN SECONDS/FAITH

So maybe it's Quadrophenia with the Cure?

wow, i can't believe Hüsker Dü has already been mentioned twice! i'll throw them in for a third vote...

Zen Arcade -> New Day Rising -> Flip Your Wig

the first two albums especially are just jaw-droppingly good.

i'll also nominate Tom Waits:

Swordfishtrombones -> Rain Dogs -> Frank's Wild Years

You're right on the Bowie -- that's an infamous trilogy out of Berlin with Eno.

Finally, one more couplet:

Echo and the Bunnymen: Crocodiles & Heaven up Here

After Forever - Prison of Desire / Decipher
Epica - The Phantom Agony / Consign to Oblivion
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast/ Piece of Mind / Powerslave
VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater / Music for People
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto / Astro Creep: 2000

Another vote for Waits.

But my favorite all time rock trilogy, and the best (IMHO, of course):

Neil Young: Time Fades Away/On the Beach/Tonight's the Night

How about quads? Though not my favourite group The Rolling Stones achived rock perfection with

Beggars Banquet -> Let It Bleed -> Stickey Fingers -> Exile on Main St.

I personally think the best 4 album run in any genre would have to be Miles Davis

E.S.P. -> Miles Smiles -> Sorcerer -> Nefertiti

One of my personal favourite doubles would be Dummy -> Portishead by Portishead.

thrice is not nearly enough for this
biggrin.gif

hüsker dü: zen arcade - new day rising - flip your wig

bowie's berlin trilogy is fine, but consecutive perfection is
ziggy stardust - aladdin sane

bad religion: suffer - no control- against the grain

...

i believe there's a lot of back-to-back "greats" in every genre, often even trilogies - not everybody has ups and downs like neil young or lou reed or ryan adams...

This is certainly true.

Yet, some of the more interesting trilogies (or back-to-backs) aren't always the best musically, but they somehow capture an artist at a particular phase (or geographic place), or maybe they represent the personality of the producer more than the band.

I guess it's maybe that the pre-17 SECONDS stuff is a little more "happy" maybe? Seems like they were still working things out and finally got down to bidness when they recorded 17.. then hit two more out of the park.
