I can get the 600 S3 for 450$ CAN instead of 500$CAN. It's quite a lot of money. I'm mostly playing 192kbps mp3's on my computer with a good sound card and an old harman kardon amp.

Is it worth paying that much? Can cheaper speakers give me that kind of sound? Can I even compare these to cheaper crystal 20 or idontrememberwhat 70S that cost 90$ us?

I'm just wondering if it's worth 450$+tax, which is about.. 515$, and that's ALOT, alot, alot.

I just went to a high end audio shop near me for a quick listen. I heard the 600s and a pair of NHTs that were about the same price. I prefered the 600s over the NHTs, but I was not all that impressed with them. My MS-2s seemed to destroy them in every area, but I guess this is to be expected. I am going to guess that big brands like B&W are a bit overpriced though. I am thinking the mission M71 and Crystal 20 aren't all that much worse than the B&W 600s. Can anyone that has heard both comment on this?

note to self: do not listen to $2200 Thiels when you cannot dream of affording them. better yet, just stay away from high end audio shops.

That's what I want to know. I'd rather pay 150$ than 450$, if the sound quality is about the same.

For one thing, I know that there's a big difference between the B&W DM 303, and the 600. They only have a 50$ gap, but the 600 is WAY more detailed, while the 303 sounds muffled (in comparaison to the 600). The 303 has a 6 inch driver and the 600 has a 5 inch driver. I don't think the bass is better on the 303 though. So um, if I had to guess, I'd say that the mission m71 ou the crystal 20 sound more like the DM 303, but probably less detailled. I mean, there has to be a reason why they retail for 90$ instead of 300. I don't think B&W is 210$ more expensive just for the name?

Was at a high end audio shop too :p The guy started by showing me the DM 600.(which is 450$CAN, already more that I was thinking of paying, lol). That was his cheapest one. After that, he was like, you can get this for 700, then 1000, bla bla bla. I was like, um, that's too much :p The dm 601 has more bass that the 600 (bigger driver and some sort of bass opening), but it's 125$ more expensive and it's just too much for my student salary. Um, in fact, no salary :p

I have auditioned both the M71 (US$250.00) and the B&W 303 (US$300.00)....to my years, the M71 was the winner. It sounded impressively smooth and has surprising amount of bass. The 303 just wasn't my cup of tea. I have also listened to the previous generation of the 601, and while it sounded great, the price difference wasn't justified.

The mission m72 retail for 170$.
Quite a difference with the B&W dm 600 @ 350$

Opinions? Somehow I just can't believe that a speaker costing half the price beats the 600?

Well, it's normal for speaker companies to update their lines every so often. Hence, B&W's 600 series X.

I have only listened to the M71 and it was very impressive, even when they retailed for $250.00/pair. I suppose the M72 will be better in the bass response, although that's subjective. Both the M71 and the M72 are highly rated in the British hi-fi press when they were in production, so in my opinion, the Mission speakers are (very) far from crap. In fact, they were probably amongst the best bookshelf speakers in that price range. The $200.00 difference makes the M72 a no-brainer purchase if I was the one making the decision.

Same here. I think we have very similar requirements.

I would pay for the B&W 600s if I really thought they were worth it, but I don't. Does anyone know where the M71 can be found online?

That's what ***I*** would do.
