I got a sinking feeling that this thread does not belong here, and that it has already been posted... but using the search function yeilds me nothing about auto ID tagging... so, does anyone know of an easy program that will automatically tag a song based on the song's filename?

I'm assuming you mean id3 tags in mp3's...

Try the MusicBrainz Tagger, found here:

http://www.musicbrainz.org/tagger/index.html

It determines song info based on an "acoustic fingerprint" so it can even correctly tag, and rename files that are inappropriately named.

My old stand-by is MPTagger:

I don't know if it's available anymore, the website seems to be down. You might have to do some searching to find it, but it works really well if you need to translate from filename to tags, and vice-versa.

If neither of these work for you, check out the Hydrogen Audio forums, you'll likely find what you want there:

well, I don't mean just mp3 ID3... other formats have similar tag options. All I really need is artist album trackname and tracknumber...

I have foobar, and I've tried the masstagger thing. I just don't understand how to use it. I've already screwed up, and somehow managed to ruin my ID<insert random number> tag on this one song, in which I just duplicated the file name several times in a row, and replaced all four values...
If you have some sort of scheme in foobar that works well for you, could you show me it? I'm kinda stuck with this program...

Doesn't really fit your description, but try TagRename. Works real well for me
