Right now I'm happy with my X2's (after having to return it twice... Jesus), but I'm already sure it won't be my endgame. Therefore I'm already looking at possible, eventual upgrades. The AudioQuest Nighthawk are the best so far in terms of what I'm looking for [with comparison to my X2's]:

  1. V-shaped / U-shaped sound signature for Metal and other bass-heavy music [X2's did this well already]
  2. Highs should therefore be pronounced, but not painfully sharp [which is a real problem with the X2... I had to EQ down some highs around 10kHz to be enjoyable]
  3. Warm, smooth, "fun". I dislike analytical and cold sound.
  4. Good soundstage / Suitable for FPS games, don't need to be perfect like Beyerdynamics, but positioning should be good enough [X2's did this well already]
  5. Relatively easy to drive, right now I own a Fiio E10K [X2's did this well already at 30 Ohms]
  6. Budget is <400€, which will probably drop a little by the time I make the decision to get new headphones [got my X2's for 200€, so this is a significant price jump for me]

Since the Nighthawks are getting discontinued in favor of the Carbons, I'm looking for alternatives. Of course I could immediately jump on the Nighthawks while they're still hot, but my X2's are no older than two months and I find the thought ridiculous to get new headphones already. I also don't want to make myself dependent on a single brand of headphones, so I'm gathering all the info I can get. :)

Found an offer for the AudioQuest Nighthawks at 339€. Also found an offer for the HiFiMan HE-400s at 299€.

Really don't know what to pick. Also still looking for other options. :)

I like my 400S very much--great imaging and soundstaging. Perfect for jazz and classical.  That said, it does begin to roll off at around 75 hz or so pretty precipitously, so if you like sub bass, you may find it lacking. The bass is enough for me the vast majority of the time. FWIW. YMMV.
