I have a new Hifiman He-400i coming in the mail soon and I thought about getting a dac to see how much difference it makes. I already have the Magni 2, and have been running it out of my laptop. I could get the Modi and complete the "Schiit Stack", but I was thinking also of getting the DragonFly Black. As I understand there is a way to use it in DAC-only mode, and run my amp out of that. I kinda like having the option to use it as a stand-alone DAC/amp when I don't want to take the stack with me, but only if I'm not sacrificing dac quality versus the Modi.

What should I expect? Is there a noticeable drop-off from the Modi to the DragonFly Black (DAC-ONLY)?
