One of the best for headphone and speakers (Temptation & Love Me Like A Man):

Unusual, but a pretty good test (Key To Her Ferrari & Ability To Swing):

If you don't mind the banjo and the drum synthesiser (Sinister Minister & Flight Of The Cosmic Hippo):

Banjo, but no drum synth this time (tracks with Marsalis and Corea - memory fails me!):

Sparse, and quite well done (I've Seen That Face Before):

Sarcasm? The only thing wrong with this album is the appallingly recording. Extremely loud with very noticeable distortion and sibilance

I have to agree. They wrote some descent songs, but they hurt my poor ears.

There has been a lot of discussion on whether DSOTM should be considered audiophile, and IMO the SACD sounds fantastic. Although its getting more rave reviews for its surround capabilities, it sounds good in stereo, and I would definitely put it in the audiophiles list of albums to listen to. Yes there are several flaws, but there are so many innovative techniques used in the recording that its a great experience to listen to this album on a decent headphone rig.

Loggins and Messina - Sittin In

I think Steely Dan - Aja has been mentioned.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumors

Getz/Gilberto on Verve V6-8545

Iron and Wine - Endless Numbered days is good, its pure folk music with great dynamic range and a really good recording process.

I wish I could reccomend the second album The Shepherds Dog, but the CD is pretty highly compressed, it annoyed the **** out of me. The Vinyl version is excellent though.

The Velvet Underground - Loaded
Telivision - Marquee Moon
Nuetral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

The Blue Nile - Hats
Blackfield I and II
Tom Waits (Orphans, Bone Machine for starters)
The Pixies (Mofi Doolittle)
Almost anything produced by Steve Albini, I like the Nina Nastasia albums.
Primus
Sufjan Stevens
Kathryn Williams
Lou Rhodes
Jazz at the Pawnshop
e.s.t
Tord Gustavsen
Dead Can Dance
Lisa Gerrard - Duality
Hugh Masekela - Hope
Hiromi
Anything from 2L

is that enough?

Usually the first CD I pull out to demo new stuff.

Edit: +1 on the recommendation for Sea Change

I would second this, and maybe some The Mars Volta. good contrast between the two aswell

I am not sure if it should be considered "audiophile" but I have a fondness to a lot of Enya's music, even on the same album there is so much variation in the music that it gives you a wide variety of sounds and styles.

You put what I wanted to say into words, there are so many layers in her music and they often differ so much song to song, she also has a beautiful voice.

I was right for once :p
