I'm sitting here listening to Sarah McLachlan's Mirrorball album and really love this album not only for the great music but also for the incredible quality of the recording. I'm just wondering what other really high quality live recordings are out there... I guess I'd also like to include recordings that aren't necesarily live but are recorded in concert halls and churches rather than in the studio. So far I have found the following:

Sarah McLachlan - Mirroball
Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Sessions
Cantus - Let Your Voice Be Heard
Cantus - Deep River
Eric Clapton - Unplugged
Diana Krall - Live in Paris

Alison Krauss + Union Station Live (Hybrid/SACD).

Wonderful performances by some of the greatest living country/bluegrass performers, superbly captured. Alison has the voice of an angel and it's beautifully presented in perfect balance with the musicians. Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas -- "the greatest dobro player the world has known" as Alison says -- were created to make music together and the engineers have captured every nuance of both, perfectly balanced. Soundstage width and depth, dynamics, timbral correctness and juicy details of the instruments, with great sense of the concert hall's space and ambient audience sounds from all directions -- are all present throughout the 2-CD release. The personalities of Alison and Jerry are also present throughout, which helps make the live performance even more involving. I listen to it often and I still find it thrilling.

Not really all of them. Some of them are live recordings but others are not. Check the packaging to make sure they were recorded live.

However, ALL of them are audiophile quality.

I don't know if they are necissarily 'audiophile grade', but I really like 'The Pixies - Live at the BBC' and 'Rage against the Machine - Live & Rare'.

EDIT: Portishead - Roseland NYC Live' is great too.

BBC recordings of Roslyn Tureck and the Carnegie Hall recordings of Rudolph Serkin, the Pollini/Abbado Beethoven Concertos, just for starters. In the world of classical music there are so many audiophile quality recordings of live concerts, that it would just fill pages on this website.

Excuse me, but all music is recorded "live." The question is whether they are recorded at concerts or recitals. I've never heard of music recorded except from a live performance, who would record a recording?
