Audioengine D1 USB DAC based off the AKM 4396 chip. SlimDevices used this same chip in their $2,000 Transporter back when it was introduced.

Audioengine D2 is a unique wireless DAC. Looks interesting but not something that I'd need anytime soon. I'm really curious about the D1 though .....
UPDATE: 1/5/12 : The D1 arrived today on loan from Brady at Audioengine ... on to some pics ...

Item comes double boxed and packed securely like other Audioengine products.

There is some slight roughness around the volume knob but only noticeable if you really look for it. Also keep in mind that is a loaner unit. The little white speck under the POWER is just a piece of dust/dirt.

The USB cable that comes with the D1 is on the right (left is Fiio E10). Just over 2 feet, gold plated connections and feels/looks thick and sturdy.

Size comparison with the Fiio E10. The D1 feels very solid and well made. Has a good weight to it.

I will get to some listening impressions later tonight. Going to hook it up and let it run for a few hours ......
HeadphoneAddict also has an on-going in depth review of the D1 which can be found here.

At the heart of the Transporter ticks the so-called 'Miracle DAC' AK4396 by Asahi Kasei Microsystems Semiconductor. It is "a true 192kHz 24-bit 2-channel DSD-capable D/A converter with AKM's advanced multi-bit architecture to achieve a virtually flat noise floor up to 80kHz. The signal-to-noise ratio in the 20kHz band extends to 120dB. In addition to excellent anti-jitter characteristics and a 256-step linear attenuator, the switched capacitor DAC incorporates AKM's unique low-power circuits. This maintains performance while reducing power consumption by 47% compared to the AK4393."
