In terms of sound quality for music, without adding a subwoofer, what else is out there for around $300? I see a lot of good reviews for the A'5 and I was wondering if there is anything out there in the $300 price just as good or maybe even better...Trying to weigh all my options before I might purchase the A5's. Thanks

Look at the Mackie MR5's.

I think they sound a little better than the A5's.

Was going to sell either the A5's or MR5's but moved the Mackies out on the patio.

They both sound good no doubt.

Do yourself a favor and go to Gituar Center and check out the MR5's.

For $300 you could get some fostex full rangers (tekton designs, or DIY), a t-amp and dac or a nuforce icon (and if you us an EQ on the player you wouldn't even need to make a baffle step correction filter if you were to DIY)

not as much bass as the a5, but much better imaging an coherence- and flexibility / upgrade path

A pair of these. IMO better than Mackie MR5, haven't had the chance to hear the A5 though, as it's not available over here.

I can second the quality of the tannoys, and even without the sub I've added their bass isnt lacking.

IMO the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set delivers better sound than the A5.

Hmm, well I already have Klipsch 2.1 Pro media speakers and thinking about Audio Engine A5 as an upgrade.  Now I'm wondering if that's a waste of money -- has anybody else listened to both?

I have the A5's and personally if I ever buy another set of 2.0 speakers, it would be the bamboo version of the A5's. They sound so nice....

I compared the A5's at home with the M-Audio BX5a and the Swan D1080MkII 08.  They were all good, but the M-audio's lacked quality bass. The A5's and the Swan's were so close, I had trouble picking a "winner". I went back and forth for over a week. Finally I picked the Swan's because I seemed to like the overall sound better, especially the mid-range, and they were over $100 less, and I couldn't ignore that. Anyway's you can't go wrong with either set of speakers. I also ended up getting an Atlantic tech Sub SB800 from Audio Advisor on sale for $201 which really helps add some punch to the bass.
