If you're into DIY you can try the Bugle from Hagerman Technologies. It looks like a fun little project with better sound than the Shack's rat according to some fellow geeks at the vinyl asylum.
Besides the extra gain the more important function of the phone stage is the RIAA equalization. There's almost no bass at all when listening to records without it, so don't even try it.
I also agree with Tuberoller. You don't have to spend a lot to have good sound and even more fun with vinyl. Get a decent used table to get started and to see what you like and what you don't and if you're still into it after half a year or so you may want to look around for something better.
