I currently have a pair of w1000s ordered... am I making a mistake? Whenever I see people talk about high end ATs that arent L3000's I see people mention the w5000s rather than anything about the w1000s. Currently my set up is the emu 0404 usb -> headroom home (Old school one) amp -> hd650s... I am buying a pair of ATs for the closed headphone aspect.

Well, the W1000 isn't a high end AT woody. The W5000 is the most high end AT woody currently in production so that's why people may overlook the W1000 when discussing AT woodies. You don't see people talking much about lower end Sennheiser cans as much as the HD580/600/650, do you?

In any case, there are some people who don't like the sound of the W1000 (and the W5000 for that matter). I happen to like the W1000 just fine. I think it is a good way to break into the AT sound for someone coming from the Sennheiser sound like I did. After the W1000, I could not go back to my HD650 and HD600 and sold both (I repurchased the HD600 last week for the sake of having a higher end Sennheiser).

The W1000 costs half as much as the W5000. If you have no experience with the AT woody experience, then I find the W1000 to be a very reasonable place to begin.

Ah thanks for weighing in... I finally waffled and cancelled my w1000 order and decided to go with the w5000. It's on sale thus 20 bucks cheaper (LOL) at audiocube for 729. I figured if at least for peace of mind the extra 330 will be worth it. This is kind of sad for me since the w1000 has been something I've wanted for a number of years. But I really don't want to risk really liking it and eternally wondering how much better the w5000 sounds.

I suppose like a properly informed buyer should, I should probably give everything I'm interested in a good listen to. But, I am lazy and I have some Chinese New Year money burning a hole in my pocket.

My headphone experience has been with etymotic er6is, senns. hd600/hd650s. Hopefully the w5000 is a welcome addition to the family... and finally my workmates will stop complaining about the noise.

PS:
Things that made me change my mind: I don't like the single cord design in the w1000. I like that the w5000 comes with a really sturdy looking case. 20 dollar sale.
Things that I will miss: The sweet wooden plug that the w1000 has.

Socrates63,

What made you re-buy HD 600 versus 650? As I understand, W1000 are not bass-monsters, wouldn't 650 complement them better? Or are 600 (and W1000) more in line with your taste?

I'm asking because I just got HD 580, and I always had interest in W1000 for some reason, so I may try them in the future.

Congratulations on your purchase. I personally have the W1000's and would like to upgrade to the W5000's once I graduate. I find them quite enjoyable and I think you would have been happy with them. They get some harsh reviews which I don't really understand, but to each his own. However, like you said you do have that piece of mind and you are only 1 upgrade away from those L3000's

Thanks haha ;p If I really like the w5000s I might consider picking up a w1000 for like traveling/road trip usage. Yeah the L3000s sound really good since things that I've seen seem to indicate that it might be one of the premiere punk/indie rock phones which are probably the genres that I do my most heavy listening in...

The W1000s are damned fine looking headphones

I miss them already. Superficial of me I know, but they really are.

I wouldn't consider it superficial. It's nice to have something beautiful to look at too!

For some reason, you say? It's the allure of the woody calling like a siren. C'mon, face facts, no other headphone looks as good as the AT woodies

. The looks combined with 6moon's review of the W1000 are what pushed me to buy one used.

I prefer the HD600 over the HD650 and missed having one around. To me, the HD600 sounds more balanced than the HD650 which I perceived to be a little too bass heavy. I'm really hoping I won't regret the repurchase. Who knows but we'll see as it is supposed to arrive Tuesday.

You are right, the charm of W1000 is substantial. Looks-wise, I prefer it to W5000 to be honest. It also looks great together with that Yamamoto amp I was unfortunate to read a review of

I'm very curious to hear HD 650. I think 580 has just enough bass (maybe it could extend a bit deeper, but I don't want any louder bass). I'll probably like W1000 as well. Of course, my opinion could change if I heard 650.

This hobby is getting too involved

Yeah, the W1000 looks amazing. But check out the pimped out box that the W5000 comes with!

Phwoar! I'd like to get some Audio Technicas but the W5000 is way outside any comfortable budget for which I can muster. If you can, post some brief impressions once you get them please

I will say with 100% confidence that you did the right thing here (unless you like statues).

I like how the cord only goes to one side on the W1000. I don't know why, but I find split cords annoying.

I just got my w-5000s and damn this case is CRAZY pimp. They are much lighter than I thought and not as closed as I would have thought... Also this is a question to other owners.. on the back side middle section of the right headphone pad there's an indentation under the leather. What is up with that? Anyone know what I am talking about? If not I'll post pics at some point.

Upon further reflection I think, that it might actually be the headphone plug pressed up against the pad while in the box? I held the plug next to the indent and it fit perfectly... is this typical? Should I worry about this at all or will, with use the headphone pad just even out and not be a big deal.
