OK. I haven't had much for headphones. Back in the day I was fortunate enough to buy myself a pair of AKG K340s new. After the years I've been looking for somewhat of an upgrade/ new pair of headphones.

I heard good things about the ATH-M50s, but how do they compare to a pair of AKG k340s?

I listen mainly to old rock on vinyls.

I am confident to tell you k340s would sound exactly the same as k340s. spooky!

Do you need open or closed cans?

HAHA. sorry my bad. I was wondering how ATH-m50s would sound compared to k340s.

And it doesn't reallt matter to me about whether closed or not. I am just looking for something under 200$ that would be as good or better than my K340s.

My first post here... and am wondering the same thing.
I too have an older pair of AKG's and wonder if the ATH-M50S will be a step up.

I'm looking for something fairly accurate but not terribly expensive.

Not sure about open vs. closed back either. Currently the AKG's let too much outside sound leak in, but not sure closed will correct that issue.
Sorry, not much experience with cans.
