Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

is this as good as ATH MSR7 ?   I heard comfort level wasn't as good as Sony brand ?

I dont have Sonys, but i use msr7 and r70x too. The r70x has better comfort and higher overal sound quality than the msr7. If you like the slightly elevated upper mid centric sound or dont want to use additional amplification, maybe you will prefer the msr7 sounds. The msr7s sound is more intimate than the r70x.

yea, but only thing is r70x is a lot more expensive....lol.  so it better be comfortable...  msr7 is more intimate ??   does that mean it is better for listening to porn type of video and sounds ?    and do you think msr7 is still pretty comfortable headset ?     CNET review keep saying Sony MDR1A is better than any audio technica.

Yea the r70x is more expensive with more refined sound...if you need this type of refinement.
Intimate, i mean you feel closer to the performers.
i think the msr7 just avarage about comfort and on the heavy side as a portable HP.

Hey guys, help me out please, I still need help with gain settings on Objective2. As I've said, my DAC's (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface) unbalanced output voltage is 1.46 volts. OP here said that optimal driving power for r70x is 5V or 7V for soft or pop music.

Does that mean that my minimum gain on Objective2 should be 3.4x (3.4x x 1.46 = 5V?) to reach that 5V minimum? How do you calculate the proper gain?

But what should my low and high gain be? I have an option to get stock O2 with 2.5x and 6.5x (this one looks kinda extreme) or pick my own custom gain settings that would fit my headphones.

Yes I'm ordering O2 soon and I'm planning to buy R70x as well. I've heard that you can calculate the proper gain for any headphones as long as you know the voltage output of your DAC. My output is 1.46 volts so I'm wondering if going with about 3.5x gain is correct calculation? What should the gain values be? I'm just following the info from OP's review which says that R70x needs about 5V in general and 7V if you listen to soft music / pop.

I just don't want to underdrive my headphones, I want to get full potential possible (of course within limits of O2).

I think it will depend on how you plan to use them. If you want something for accurate home listening then the r70x is great, very comfortable and quite neutral sounding. The mdr-1a is very comfortable too but not neutral sounding at all, its quite bassy and dark and doesnt isolate very well for a closed headphone. The msr7 is not as comfortabe but isolates a lot better so more suitable for portable listening, it has more of a classic audio technica sound, fairly balanced sounding with some emphasis in the upper mids/treble.

ya,  MSR7 not being as comfortable does worry me.   I am into comfort.   I may have to buy Sony then.  mainly I need it to watch videos, movies, and listening to Classical Music from the internet.   like Utube and apple sites.

Yeh the mdr-1a is a good choice for home listening, very comfortable, bassy, dark and they have quite a big soundstage which works well for classical music.
