Audio Technica ATH-M50 - What's all the fuss about?

So you are just proving that people hear things differently.

People: M50s mids are recessed, You: NO THEY'RE NOT RAWR
Me: Beats are more mid forward than M50, You: NO THEY'RE NOT RAWR

This may surprise you, but you are not always right. Take a deep breath and calm down.

If really sounds like YOU are the one raging to be honest.

No, I said I don't agree. Simple as that.

It doesn't help getting told by a bunch of new members.

'None of your business' again I suppose, but ok:

amped direct through portable (Samsung Galaxy) - bass sounds overemphasised, mids recessed (similar to the Beats I tried, though not as bad)
amped through FIIO E9/E7 combo - bass overemphasised, mids recessed, only minor improvement in overall clarity
amped through O2, line out from modified ASUS Xonar Essence - as above

Pretty consistent in its characteristics.  My wife agrees on the bass (but doesn't understand what I mean by recessed mids).

Are you going to come back once again and claim my assessment meaningless, like you have all others?  Or are you now going to claim I don't own this equipment, either?

Why didn't you start out with this?
Don't you think it would have been better than recycling unfounded statements? In case you don't understand "unfounded", it means providing no basis for your claims.
Which I've finally coaxed out of you. As for everything else, I'm not forcing you into my views. YMMV.
End rant.

God almighty - will you stop this petulance towards 'new members'?  Just because you waste more of your life posting on messageboards, that doesn't make you a source of authority!

Yeah very funny, 1,400 posts in a 4 year period is too much.
I honestly don't care what you think of me.
Just try to keep the personal attacks to a minimum.
I don't waste my life.

Ok fine, I take that back - but in honesty your angry response felt more like the personal attack to me.

Apology accepted. I wasn't trying to be angry.
Put yourself in my footsteps, I do my best to ignore these threads. Don't you think it's a bit frustating how the people reading this thread are getting the wrong impression? Not aimed at you but people need to present an objective view as you yourself agree with. Not a biased statement that doesn't help.
As for this thread, I'll refrain from posting in it. Though God knows how we derailed it :)
I do personally regret if any of my statements were offensive.

You really a re a nasty piece of work, aren't you?

'Stop posting on threads about cans you don't own' - uhm... think you'll find I was posting about working conditions in China, not the K701s!  I was reading the thread for information as I had been considering purchasing them!

But of course, you don't bother to take the time to read before posting your rants.

No thanks, I prefer not to be banned.
You, however, can continue your rage.

Sure you borrowed them for a few days, maybe you should have stated that beforehand. Demoing or having impressions is different from continued head-time.
I didn't make a claim that you don't own m-50s. I told you to stop posting on threads about cans you don't own. For example the k701 thread.

Just saw your comment about the K701s - out of order.

It could be sources with recessed mids.  The M50 does a have slight dip in the upper mids affecting the tone of female vocals and some strings but the mids as a whole are not recessed and the measurements bear this out.  The mids are largely neutral with a slight bass and treble emphasis making a U- shape.  This is not the same as recessed mids where bass and treble are neutral and the mids get sucked out.  If you use boosted extremes as your reference than you can mistakenly call the mids recessed, but the M50 bass and treble is boosted over neutral where most of the mids are except for that upper mid dip I mentioned.

Along w/ sources having emphasized extremes, different listening volumes will accentuate different things for different people.  I've come to know and look out for impressions from folks I know/believe listen at very low volumes as I know they won't correspond to my own.  Suffice to say, I never listened to the M50 at low volumes.

You can compare the M50 to the Sony V6 here:

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SonyMDRV6.pdf

The SA5000 never seemed mid recessed either, I've never run across a single impression of the kind:

The complaint is always recessed bass and maybe some treble peaks at high volume.  This illustrates many people are talking in relative terms not in absolute terms.

If the Sony V6 is your standard then the T1, HD800, LCD2/3, Stax and Baby Orpheus are mid recessed too.

-Edit - Plus you might want to give the M50 a week or two just in case they surprise you all of a sudden.  You never know.  Though the OP's sig preference sounds more like Shure 840 or Senn 558/598.

Thank you, a refreshing read after what preceeded.

Recessed in absolute terms may not be correct, but recessed in relative terms (due to emphasis on bass and highs) does therefore appear to be a fair assessment.

My opinion would be that where there is a U-shaped signature (lows, highs, with greater emphasis than mids) this can give the same impression as where mids are recessed, but I do not have the means to test this.

M50's mids are more recessed than the following phones that I have owned:  Denon D2000, SRh840, DT1350, V-moda M80, ESW9, DT880, K702, HD650, HD600. I did some extensive A/B comparison between M50 and quite a few of these phones with different sources so I know what I am talking about. I want to point out that this opinion is based on my own ears.

To be honest I didn't expect my claim that this were the case would cause such a fuss.  It just seemed so obvious from multiple setups I assumed it was intentional (sound signature) and a given.

I think it's worth noting that I personally have heard two kinds of M50, one with recessed mid and one without recessed mid. The recessed mid ones are more the norm from my encounters. My own M50S LE is not recessed, and I have found one other M50S (regular) that is not recessed, but all of the other ones I have heard (M50 and M50S regular) are all recessed.

The non-recessed ones are more balanced, with high frequencies extending very deep (almost rivaling my DT990). The recessed ones have more bass emphasis (thus "weight" and "texture") but lacks the soundstage and high frequency extension.

But I can't conclusively say that this is the case since I don't have any scientific way to prove it. Also the difference in sound signature is not that significant, but it's noticeable, at least where midrange is concerned.

Thanks, mine are the M50.  I believe they are an older model (but I haven't taken the time to read up on the subtle M50 variants).

Well, from what little I know about the M50, they have the following variants:

M50 w/ coiled cord & blue box
M50S w/ straight cord & blue box
M50 w/ coiled cord & white box
M50S w/ straight cord & white box
M50S 50th Anniversary Limited Edition (only 5200 are produced) silver color w/ straight cord & white box
M50WH white color w/ coiled cord & white box

As for the specific sound signature, I have read reports all over the place. Some say it's recessed-mid, some say not, and it's very inconsistent, but since I have heard both a recessed and non-recessed one, I can at least tell you that it's not just the ears of the listener. It's an actual difference.

Why there is such a difference, I have no idea. Some people have claimed that even Audio Technica themselves said that there shouldn't be a difference.
