I pulled out my old a9 today and had a listen. Very nice headphone, but the pads were falling apart. They're not available any more so I went up to the sock drawer......
In the end, I found that a set of AKG K550 pads fitted perfectly.
Even better, the results are....
More comfort. They now feel really luxurious.
The sound has taken a step towards the bass tonally so it's less edgy and has a warmer bass.
To me, it sounds more 'right' with these pads and is now a lovely warm listen with no harsh Audio Technica edges to worry about.
So if you have an old a9 stuffed away, a pad swap is well worth the effort. You get a new, more comfortable headphone with a nice, big weighty sound.
