Audio-GD FORMER Owners-

How do they compare? I'm also an R2R 11 owner that's been thinking of upgrading.

The Ares is a stand-alone dac and as such, IMO outperforms the R2R11 in most every way - clarity, detail, soundstage ...etc.
It was audibly obvious to me right out of the box. Of course the R2R11 is a dac/headphone amp/preamp and it excels at that.
Again IMO any significant improvement in dacs would come at a very high cost.

AudioGD is excellent built with technologies and designs optimized and even with quality components. It pricing is mind blowing, I mean it look almost to be the price of the parts/components by itself.

This makes the AudioGD such an affordable product lines, and that enthusiasts like us can totally enjoy the top of the line amplifier or DAC at a friendly pricing. Why would I call it Top of the line ? Because the designs, the quality components.

However, why would people move on and away from it ? We are all plagued simply put it that way. We are the curious cat bunches, and we always want to find something else when there is money in the pocket, read, learn, research, and it doesn’t matter if it is an upgrade, or sidegrade. To have a different signature and taste for a while is worth the money spent.

If this thread topic is about why people move on so fast from AudioGD ? And the real question is is it that bad of performances? My answer would be doubtful. These devices constantly blow people who is knowledgeable in EE and DIY community by ut design and parts used. The plausible answer is that because it is affordable, because it is not a Brand name, and because people are Plagued for something new.

If you bought a Dave for $10,000, and you can only save up to $2k a year for this hobby. It then take 5 years before you think about upgrade to another device....or if you count in the re-budget if you sold the Dave for 6k, it would take 2 years before you move on. For AudioGD, their R2R is $2,700. If you are bored and sold it for $1800, you can still move on in after 6 months of ownership (assuming cheap sell)

I hope it makes sense

And there seem to be some die-hard Audio gd bashers , especially on the other “famous” website.

Just ordered the R2R11 from KingWa. I like the way KingWa communicates with his customers.

If you go to the once Audiophile web-site Audiogon before they changed owner(s), you see "it" all the time. Ppl dumped their gear before they learned how the gear interact with their room. The same goes with headphones and DAC Amps. Either a mis-match components or in some case, the itch for upgrading.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, instead of selling one, I bought another AGD...the NFB-28.38! I should get it this Thursday.

I've had my Audio-GD gear (in my sig) for probably 2, maybe 3 years now? I can't remember. Still loving it.

M11 (original version) makes my Utopia's sing... Precision 1 (now discontinued) does the same with my LS50's for speaker listening.

I kind of just lost the upgrade-itis disease :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Agree with M11 + Utopia part.
I am thinking about getting an M7 since M11 is so good.

I owned a NFB-28.38 for maybe 5-6 months. I wanted to try things that weren’t all in one and with better DACs. Which I could have gotten through AGD too. That much is true. Also wanted to try tube amps again. Something I don’t believe they offer.

As far as things I didn’t like. I didn’t like how quickly the volume knob went bad. If I turned it too quickly it would go crazy and go both down and up. The size of the NFB-28 is rather huge. Too big for what’s in there, imo. In addition I prefer wide over long for my space constraints. Besides that I sold the thing only to have the buyer discover that one of the XLR outs was bad. Luckily they were were able to replace the jack on their own. I had only used it as an all in one. And another offputting thing is sending it back to China for repairs. Too expensive.
