Hi sorry if this is the wrong forum but i need help & i need it bad.I recently bought a rcd-w500c/w100 cd recorder to record my vinyl mixes. My deck is going through a gemini ps-626i mixer then into a technics su-v300 amp.I have all the levels set to full but when i record the sound is incredibly quiet (almost inaudable) & very tinny.Im sure all the record levels are fine so dont know what to do.Any ideas would be appreciated. Many thanks for your time.

Are you plugging the turntable directly into the CD recorder?

Hi Soundboy
No im playing my decks through a gemini mixer (with built in pre-amp) & then into my amp so i dont think the signal is a problem.Ive been asking everyone a no one has a clue,it should be okay.Im sure its simple though.

Is it only the recording itself that's too quiet and tinny sounding? Does it sound right if you playback a regular audio-cd on the recorder?

Greetings to you too
Yes its fine if i play & record from the cd tray. Its just recording externally im having a problem.Admitedly i haven't finalised any c.d's yet but when im recording, the beat counter on the recorder only moves a tiny ammount as though the sound just aint getting through.Any clues?

It sounds like you need a phono preamp. Your mixer probably doesn't have one built in.

See ya

Steve: Sou you think the three phono inputs on his dj mixer as well as the one on his integrated amp aren't enough already?

sunchild: I'd suspect some kind of tape in/out cabling confusion or you forgot to turn up some output or input level. Can you tell us _exactly_ how you cabled your stuff together?

Hi Manfred / Lini
As you say my mixer has a built in pre-amp so that is not the problem.I have my decks going into the phono sockets at the back of the mixer,on the back of the mixer there is three outputs master/booth/record,i have tried using all three but it doesn't seem to make a difference. This is then going into the Aux socket on my amp (i know it should be phono but it is to distorted.Any ideas why?)but i have recorded onto cassette using this connection with no problems. The cd recorder is plugged into my tape/monitor in/out conector (i tried using the tape 2/dcc but nothing). As i have said before it is recording but incredibly quietly so it may be some inbuilt level but the only record level for external recording is up to full.I am really fed up as i think its to late to take it back to the shop now.Any expertise on this model may help, ive tried sony but they were no help.

Hmmm, let's see... First: Have you checked the tape connection for the recorder? Tape/Record Out on the Technics should go to Analog In on the Sony - and Tape/Playback/Monitor In on the Technics should be connected the Analog Out on the Sony. Checked?

Ok, next thing to check for: The output on the Gemini you ought to use for recording purposes is the Record Out - that's the line output of your mixer supposed to provide the mix for recording purposes. The other ones (Master & Booth) have additional volume controls and are meant to connect power amps (or powered monitors) for the pa speakers in the dance hall as well as some monitor speakers in the dj booth or in another second listening zone (e.g. the bar area...). And it's correct to connect that Record Out to the Aux In on your Technics, 'cause the phono stages in the mixer already provide a line-level signal - that means the phono signal is already amped by factor ~100 and RIAA (re-)equalized (and that's why it won't work with the Phono In on your Technics - using that, you'd perform the amplification and RIAA (re-)equalization twice...).

Now, next step is to produce a good signal for recording. On your mixer, you'd best use channel 2 and 3 for connecting your turntables - 'cause then you can use the level indicator of your mixer to control the output level (use the switch on the meter to switch from master output level to channel 2 & 3 level control!). Now put on a record and search for a loud part - with the slider in the marked standard position turn up the gain control so that you get some 0 - 3 dB reading on the level indicator). Now we should have a good signal on the Record Out. On your Sony, you should now switch the input for recording to Analog In - then you should be ready to record, using the level control for adjusting the record level.

That's about it - i.e. that's the way it should work.

No it shouldn't. If you run it through two phono preamps you're doubling the RIAA eq. and gain. Once you're mixer takes the phono signal to line level, you run it into line inputs thereafter.

Can't you just go from the mixer output directly into the CD recorder?

I suspect you have the ins and outs crossed on the CD recorder.
