I'm looking to upgrade from my ATH-AD700s to something in the $300 range, I was wondering whether the Audinst HUD-MX1 is powerful enough to drive the AKG701s. I've heard rumors that they are particularly hard to drive. (well, maybe not 'powerful' enough, as the MX1 is supposed to be able to drive headphones up to 600 Ohms, but that they work well together)
Does anyone have any experience with this combination? Does it gel well, or are other headphones recommended for the DAC/amp?
I'm also open to suggestions for other open, non-grado headphones around that range. I listen to everything except for rap, metal and country music.
