Hey, I've got a pair of those Pioneers. Not sure if it's the same model number, but they look exactly like them. I tried my pair a month ago and they sounded like crap. Big and heavy too.

I had similar Pioneers too. The one that I owned had a volume and a tone control on each side. Yeah, I don't remember them sounding too good but they look cool. Looking back at all these vintage headphones and others that were posted prior, I've come to admire their beauty. The design of these older headphones have a very cool look, a more romantic image of "futuristic." I was thinking, wouldn't be something if it possible to retro fit modern drivers into them without changing the of their sound. Then an idea came to me, what if we could buy just headphone drivers and design our own earcups for them. You could interchange different drivers to experiment with what sounds best. Ehh!!!????

After my success moding the stanton xxi's with Denon 950 drivers I am thinking more and more about getting new drivers and cool retro phones to house them... Kind of a silly hobby but hey it's something. the HD580 drivers are only 70 bucks, plus 20 for a cool looking pair of open air retro phones... thats a couple hundred bucks of top notch performance in a sweet looking package at a bargain price. Plus the joy of fiddling with it and cutting metal and using power tools....

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I used my old HD600 cord! That could be part of the reason why overall I would have to say that the modded stantons sound better than the original 950's.

MBRIANT - he says they sound great, and then he mentions that he uses them with his metal detector!! LOL

Damn, I've got a pair of those Superexes, but with out the gold. Anyone want them? They'd probably survive a direct nuclear attack, or even UPS ground shipping.

So are there ANY "vintage" headphones you guys would recommend? Sure - the technology of the 70s and 80s wasn't what it is today, but it wasn't exactly the dark ages either. There must have been some top of the line units from Koss, Stanton etal. that sound good and might occasionally show up on ebay for $14.95. Guess a person could go thru back issues of HiFi & Stereo Review, etc. looking for reviews, but that sounds like work. Are there any headphone historians on board?
