The thin cables above the Y-split have become fairly brittle and cause a lot of cable noise. Is there anything I can do to soften them, or even have them replaced? I assume the oil from my skin has caused the hardening, so would warm soap help restore them?

I'm taking a wild guess here. Baby oil in small amounts will take to the rubber cable. Use a small amount on a clean cloth, run the cloth up and down the cable. Let it dry then repeat the process 2 - 3 times.

It was used in the war on car upholstery and plastics.
