Anyone know which sounds better? I've read conflicting information where people have said one or the other is better...

Not that it matters I guess...cause the Sony HD5 plays LAME still, right?

That's a tough question and depends on what you think better is. In general Atrac3 plus colours the sound but produces less annoying artifacts. In other words, the artifacts are more listenable and can be musical. However, lame can use a variable bitrate and tends to be more accurate, but the artifacts are more annoying and harsher. Atrac3 plus also produces a higher frequency range, whereas lame tends to place a filter when using the presets. At the higher bitrates, the differences are less noticeable. The best things to do is listen to various samples and decide on the one you prefer. Some people prefer colouration, while others prefer accuracy.

On the hd5, Atrac3 plus has a better battery life and is gapless. But you have to use sonicstage to encode the music.
