Anyone know which sounds better? I've read conflicting information where people have said one or the other is better...

Not that it matters I guess...cause the Sony HD5 plays LAME still, right?

Yeah, the HD5 does support MP3 natively now

If you see my thread, I'm having trouble with some CDs....

But out of interest, I listened to the WAV files before deleting them....wow

almost worth getting a external HD for

That's a tough question and depends on what you think better is. In general Atrac3 plus colours the sound but produces less annoying artifacts. On the hd5, Atrac3 plus has a better battery life and is gapless. But you have to use sonicstage to encode the music.
