The ATH-W100's were my main cans for a while and I wouldn't call them bright by any means, in fact they were too passive for me. They were very laid back and had no vava-voom. I wouldn't say this was the case because of neutrality (like a Meridian CDP), it just seems the natural idiosyncrasy of ATH's. I found the same results with the 1000's, 2002's and the Leatherheads.
