I'm currently thinking of purchasing a pair of audio technica m50x's. They will be used for producing and listening to music. Does anyone have a pair, and if so, would you recommend this headphone? One of my biggest concerns is the comfortability. I have a larger head size and headphones usually tend to hurt my head after long periods of time (especially the beats headphones I used to own). I'd definitely want them to be comfortable while I sit at the computer and produce or listen to music for hours per day.

My second concern is: would I get the full experience by listening to music with these on my iphone? Would it help at all if I got a DAC? Would they require an amp? I will be listening to lossless files like flac or alac.

If anyone could answer these questions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would not recommend the M50x (especially not for studio use) unless you equalize it. The main reason is because it has overwhelming bass that makes it sound muddy sometimes. If you equalize it, this is no longer an issue. Comfort is decent, but always depends on the size and shape of your head and ears, so no guarantees. You can drive them with a computer or phone, but you'll probably want to use an amp, and a better DAC can certainly be worthwhile, though I wouldn't bother if all you're going to use is that headphone without ever upgrading.

+1
M50X is not a good set of cans for producing music.

Perhaps AKG K550 as an alternative?
