I bought this pair on fleabay but the guy wasn't an authorized reseller.

Should I buy the 3yr warranty from Squaretrade for $17.99? Do headphones fail..? Sorry for my noobishness.

Well that's up to you, if you take care of them they last for years.

I take care of all my stuff, just wondering if headphones sometimes just spontaneously combust..

Rarely.
Adding some extra protection to your investment doesn't hurt.
