Just picked up a pair of ATH-M50's.  
 
I currently have 2 outputs for the headphone.
 
1. Hooked up directly to my desktop via 3.5mm.
 
2. 3.5mm split AV cable (from my computer) that goes so my SONY AX-497 then I use the 1/4 jack.
 
 
 
I find that option #2 seems to sound better?  Why is this if the source is still from my computer?

Perhaps the amp is better able to control the power to the drivers in comparison to just to PC.
