Is upgrading from and AD700 to a A900 significant? Other than open vs closed.

I've used the A900, but not the AD700. The answer depends on synergy and preference. Headphones sound different with different associated equipment, potentially very different. If comparing these two, what would you be plugging them into? Not everyone uses the same sound card, source, DAC, amp, etc., and not everyone prefers the same headphones with their associated equipment. The bottom line: the only way you're going to know which you prefer is to compare them for yourself with your equipment.

Upgrade? The A900 is vastly different from the AD700, with a darker signature and recessed mids. I would really hesitate considering it to be an upgrade, you'll struggle to think of what the A900 is better than the AD700 in (yeah, maybe it has a bit more bass, but then again it isn't a D2000). Neither is the AD900 really an upgrade to the AD700, in some ways it's inferior to the AD700, especially in terms of the highs. The only true upgrade is the AD2000.

How are the highs on the AD900 inferior to the highs on the AD700? What other ways are they inferior?

Ok, maybe they are not inferior, but I personally feel that the highs of the AD900 is very similar to those of the Grados and is a bit fatiguing and harsh, so I prefer the AD700's highs.

Thats not good. I was hoping they would be smoother since I find the AD700 verging on being a bit harsh. Oh well. I guess they are not for me then.

Maybe Beyerdynamic DT660@Amazon $124.96? Take a look at those, and see if you can audition them somewhere.
Good Luck & Happy New Year

Well I guess similar to AD700's but better detail and closed? Price lower than $200 USD. If that makes sense...

You can try the JVC HX900, it's supposed to be more detailed than the A900. Although I am not sure if it can be as detailed as the AD700.

I currently have the AD700s and have decided to upgrade to a set of denon D2000s.

I wanted something with better quality and that sounded different from the 700s so that I would have some variety in my headphone collection. I felt like the d2000s have everything i wanted, without sacrificing the great sound state that I have become use to with the 700s.

Check them out, see if you would agree.
