I'd like to try one of AT's woody phones. Simply put, what would I be losing by going after the much less & obviously more available 1000s? I gather the 2002s are nicer/better cosmetically. How large are the sonic differences & is this gap worth pursuing/wallet emptying?

It's a big gap. Worth the cost. Ath-w2002 is a great headphone you won't be disapointed if you have the right setup for it.
