Astell & Kern SR25: The next A&norma player

On settings menu, Timer Settings values goes back to default by itself. I want to set them as following:
- auto power off: always turn on
- screen timeout: 30 seconds
- sleep timer: 10 minutes

I set these values and after 30 seconds, screen turns off as expected. And after 2-3 minutes when I go back to settings, I see that sleep timer is set back to always turn on.
I was able to reproduce this issue on my SR25. I will share with the dev team when they are back to work on Monday.

Hi everyone,

Should I say "Houston we have a problem" ?
I have Tidal installed in SR25. I downloaded all my Albums to use OFFLINE (almost 2 days to do so). So, 10 mins ago I finally preparing myself for a perfect evening listening to my favorite albums on Tidal....offline. Just turned offline mode ON at Tidal, went to My Collection/ Downloaded / Albums / View All. Selected one of my favorite album and the result...."Offline page Could not be found" "Press Retry to download the missing offline page".
Really?

So, I found out that I need, while ONLINE, to press in each album to them be available OFFLINE. Basically, I have to visit the albums while I'm online so that they can be available offline! The weirdest thing ever because this only happens with the SR25. This don't happens with Tidal at my S10+ smartphone neither happened with my DX220!

Could anyone please, try to reproduce this?

Thanks.

Yes, I’ve reproduced this same problem.... every month I’ve had a Tidal subscription.

it’s a bug in their apk, I’ve raised this with Tidal several times now, they do not seem very interested to fix it.

best solution I’ve found is to put everything on playlists, they are not affected by this bug.

Thanks a lot.
Yes, they don't care even if they have a special page for AK!
I will try to figure it out the best solution.

Thanks again.

But, this only happens with AK daps right?

Because I have not this issue while using my smartphone or my old DX220 dap.

Hello,

I haven't tried to reproduce this issue. But did you try this: do not turn on offline mode on TIDAL, let it stay in online mode, but just cut the wi-fi connection on SR25. As I said, I haven't tried offline mode on TIDAL yet but, on an old ipod touch I had encountered such problem and this was my solution to it.

And to your scenario again, do you just need to visit every and each album ONCE in online mode for them to be available on offline mode? OR, do you need to do it every single time you switch from online mode to offline mode?

Best regards,

No, I just need to visit ONCE while online. After that it will be available offline "for good". Anyway, it's annoying to need to visit all of them at least once online because all of them are at the device memory (microSD) already!
Let me check your tip 🤞

Nope, doesn't work.
Works fine with the ones I had already visit but with the ones I didn't visit yet this message appeared "No Connection - Tap To Refresh".
Thanks anyway.

It's almost 4 a.m. here, the best time to listen to music and write a follow up about my experience with the cute and expensive toy, aka AK SR25.
This think was made to play music files stored in the memory device (internal or ext card) using the native music player. In this situation, everything is smooth and a great experience!

This thing was not made to play music from not native apps (sideloaded ones) at least, not with Tidal. That doesn't mean it cannot do it but the experience it's really a bad and annoying one! Using Tidal as an example:
- playing albums offline it's a nightmare as I explained in the previous posts;
- navigating through Tidal it's so slow compared to the navigation in a smartphone that ruins all the fun and the whole experience! The app almost freezes when navigating through a fair amount of albums at my collection!

So, for now and personally, I have 2 options:
-keep the toy and uninstall Tidal and FORGET about Services. Playing music only from the native AK player and flac files stored in the memory device. The navigation to albums, artists, genre, folders, etc it's really quick and smooth. Nice experience, no nightmare here!
-Sell it and keep my trusty S10+ and DC04 combo. Using UAPPro as a music player for stored flac files and Tidal app for offline Albums and Playlists from my Tidal Collection are both quick and smooth and an hassle free experience. Sound quality it's, at least, on pair with SR25.

-Sell it and buy another DAP capable of offering an enjoyable experience as a smartphone and giving me a really upgrade in the sound department!

Need to think about it now. The sun is almost raising now.

Cheers.

And, as the sun has not yet risen, I honestly cannot see the Android experience here! They say Android 9. Really? I'm on Android from Gingerbread (2.3) till now (11) and I can't feel the "Android experience" on this device (SR25). So, why bother with the marketing of Pie. Just say it's a Digital Audio Player with BT and WiFi to easily update the FW.

Unfortunately, it's not “for good”, because this will happen again next month at the time your Tidal subscription is renewed. At least that's what always happens to me...therefore I minimise the number of Albums that I try to store Offline.

Well, so far, I’ve not had any similar issues with Apple Music. The good news for me at least is it’s not the SR25 that is the problem.

, I have 2 options:
You have a 3rd option, and that is to just ditch Tidal and use another service. Qobuz is not available to me here, but is it available to you?
I don’t currently subscribe to Spotify, but I will absolutely check it out again when they go hi res later this year. If their SQ is good, then buh bye Tidal...

No, Qobuz not avaliable here in Portugal too.
Great. If the problem it's with Tidal I will move to another service that works as soon as I find one.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

Now that I got my morning coffee (and you should be sleeping soon 🙂) allow me to discord about "it's not the SR25 that is the problem.". I would say the opposite. Let me explain my point of view based in what I can see now.
- I'm using the same version of Tidal (2.39.0) in both my Galaxy S10+ and my SR25. In the smartphone (which have much fast processors and 12 GB of RAM) handling those five hundred something albums it's an easy task. Very fluid navigation through My Collection, opening each album, scrolling top to bottom quickly. No lag, no artwork mismatching, etc. Online or offline!
In the SR25 side a completely different story. There is a huge lag in all aspects of the navigation through Tidal. If I press Albums at My Collection the first message it's "You don't have any Album in your Collection...." and only after a few seconds the Albums will appear. Pressing "View all" will lag terribly until the Albums appears in the screen! And now if I scroll Albums with an up or down swipe movement, the ArtWork of each Album will be changing for a while (like a casino machine 😅) until it sets down. If pressing in an Album now, the first thing that will appear at the screen it is "No connection please tap to refresh". But I don’t need to do anything because after a few seconds the Album will appear by itself!
So, in my opinion, this is not a Tidal problem but a lack of processing power from the SR25 to handle Tidal properly!

And now this:
Curiously, the default AK music player can handle easily, really easily without any discernible lag, almost 1000 flac albums that I have installed in the 1TB microSD card! Navigation through Songs. Albums, Genres, Artists, etc it's a joy and a great experience 💪.

About the "not for good" part.
I am pretty sure that with both, my mobile and my previous dap, the iBasso DX220 that I had for a few months, all my offline Albums and Playlist remain/remained in the device "for good ", unless I uninstall Tidal for some reason! They remain/ remained there and can/could be available each time I switch/ switched to offline use.

So, in conclusion and once more imo, SR25 its a very well built and aesteticaly pleasant little DAP with the right size to be easily transportable, with a great sound (although no better than an iBasso DC04 docked to an high end smartphone), a great battery life with a pretty decent music player builded in.

If I keep it, I will "remove" all my offline Tidal Albuns and only keep the 6 or 7 Playlists I have for offline use! I am pretty sure, like this will be no lag and the offline experience using Tidal will be enjoyable as it should be.

Have a nice weekend.

Cheers.

Yeah, Tidal playlists are the way to go. I only keep a few albums Offline that are recent Discoveries, and if they are not worthy then I just let them go, otherwise they go on a playlist.

This Tidal issue seems to be with the .apk. It's really frustrating, because Tidal have managed to get the .apk to do whatever DRM-check with the offline playlists just fine, but not albums. I do not have similar Tidal problems with offline albums on my iPhone.

As far as the general UI performance of the SR25, I have to say my expectations are always low based on the fact it is using Android. Whatever lag it does have I don't get too stressed about as I'm usually just trying to chill and listen to some tunes anyway, ya know? I'm ok to have a 'leisurely' UI experience as a sacrifice for the outstanding SQ.

I just remind myself it is very much a luxury toy after all, and if I really want better I can just sell it and drop another $2kgs on something else....
