ASIO 4 all

AFAIK, the windows master volume control, you're referring, only controls the hardware directly --> audio stream does not go through this volume control.

You can bypass this master volume control by disabling the mixer device (device manager).

I don't know the Total Bithead so it's hard to tell why KS won't work w/ it. Maybe some settings (resampling, output format (bit-depth), etc.) or perhaps Total BitHead does not have KS capable WDM drivers.

I have tried ASIO4all and the USB-ASIO driver with my TBH and Desktop DAC/AMP and prefer the USB-ASIO driver sound wise. I did have to pay for that one though.

As I understand it a DAC will convert any digital audio signal?

Isn't it the soundcard where the problems would lie in this case?

I meant direct USB feed, no soundcard in path.

I thought the Stello DA1000 in your sig was a soundcard? Is it an amp then?

I find the same thing using the Bel Canto dac3. I had trouble telling any difference between ASIO4all and directsound. I do hear a small improvement going to USB_ASIO, but it cost about $56 for the license and it may not seem worth it to many.

It's DA100, not DA1000, and it's a DAC. HP100 is an amp.
