Are X-Fi cards generally considered "the best" for gaming?

Basically, yes...although Auzentech has a card out now with the X-Fi chip. So it's not just Creative cards for gaming.

I don't believe any other cards (i.e. not made by creative/auzen) have full EAX support at for whatever the latest version is. Most support it to some degree (like EAX 3 or something).

x2. The reason creatives are the best for gaming is they are the ones with the most support for EAX.

XtremeGamer is fine too, avoid the XtremeAudio

X-Fi's are easily the best gaming cards on the market (minus the xtremeaudio). Razer tried to market a powerhouse sound card and it's ages behind the X-Fi in terms of EAX and OpenAL support. Seeing as Vista is designed with OpenAL in mind, the X-Fi is the best for future support as well.
