I think amp designers try to design amps - tube, ss or hybrid - to what they feel is the correct sound based on their preference and based on their reference transducers. However, their preference may not be what is preferred by their costumers. But the customers rely heavily on reviews. Reviewers have biases. So at the end of the day, the amp that gets the best review sell the most. Just my opinion.

I too think that every amp has a "house sound" based on the designer's/maker's preferences.

This reminds me of carburetors and fuel injection... One you can tweak easily with your tools the other requires re-flashing an ECU.
 
We should allocate 20 Million dollars of our budget to research and create playing back near original sound!
