Are there any stores in the Bay Area that let you test out high end headphones?

Audio High in Mountain View has the LCD-2's and most of the high end Sennheisers from the HD650's downwards.
They have a selection of VERY high end amps and many cd's.  The employees will let you listen for as long as you want and even recommended me some great music,
