Are the MS1 still the beast headphone (unamped) under the 100$?

So called bowl pads are the stock pads the more expensive Alessandros and all Grado SR cans from 125s up are equipped with.
They are not mandatory though .Quarter modded Senn pads (pads originally made for the Sennheiser HD414 with a quarter sized hole in the middle) are even better IMO and cheaper, at least where I live.

I find bowls nicer than 414s, but not by much...

I love my MS-1i's, and I was running them straight out of my soundcard for a long time. For 100$ you honestly can't go wrong, especially with the HD414 pads. I found them a nice addition, definately worth the extra cost.

Ok, thanks you all xD

But, is there a guide for the hd414 mod?

How about an instructional video in this thread.

edit:
Already own Sennheiser HD580 & JVC RX700 and am torn with either the MS-1(i) or spending a bit more and buying an AKG K701. Amp is the tubey Darkvoice 332. Heck, do I really need another pair of headphones? I already own onepair of open and one pair of closed cans (though I know I'm in the wrong forum to ask that question...).

edit 2: - aw crap, just bought a pair of AKG 701s.
