I thought there were less than that.

I guess "discontinued" just added several hundreds of dollars to the previous going rate.

I'm surprised manufacturers don't come out with brand new, and already discontinued, headphones.

Imagine the price hike on those, huh?

So that makes them $1399 overpriced!

Well, one of both mentioned manufacturers has with Ultrasone at least the high claim in engineer's power and product quality commonly.
But both have exclusively open-back high-end hp in the program which fulfil maybe not all needs and tastes.
To develop really good closed-back hp might be much more difficult and be more expensive therefore.
Also think that Ultrasone is as opposed to Sennheiser a very small manufacturer, like Grado.
Which of the three ones has now the best prices?

you can still get them new for $1100 they don't seem to be selling out anytime soon with the arrival of the HD800's and ps1000's

Don't forget the Edition 8 is coming in and will take some of the market of the Edition 9.

And the new Edition8 took the price into account, it's being listed competitively with the HD800. And Mopps does have a point. My impression was that it's harder to design a closed headphone due to resonance issues than open back, open back cheaper for the same quality if sound. But there are many other closed back "luxury" item headphones, R10, W5000, D7000, DX700/DX1000, L3000 and so on.

MSRP and street price is two different things.
As these become more rare I am sure the stores adjust their price closer to or identical to the MSRP, since they will eventually sell anyway.

Probably second place with the Edition 7 taking the cake.

They are still selling the ED9 for $1109
